About This Presentation:
Infrared thermography can be a powerful diagnostic tool to identify various building enclosure problems. In recent years, infrared thermography has seen incredible expansion in building-enclosure related use as a cost-effective, non-destructive evaluation tool for these types of conditions. Unfortunately, the ease of use and seemingly easy-to-interpret imagery also gives way to misuse and misinterpretation. This paper summarizes several frequently overlooked nuances of building-enclosure related infrared work, and discusses how to avoid resulting misrepresentations. Using building enclosure investigation case studies, this paper describes undesirable effects of ambiguity of thermal patterns, environmental conditions, and limitations of current infrared thermography practice with respect to identifying moisture in roofing, as well as summarizes techniques we use to overcome them.
