Archetypes: Thermal Bridge

This project is the exploration of the concept of thermal bridging. This concept explores ideas of thermodynamics but specifically heat transfer. This project is based on the heat loss of a building because of a thermal bridge running through the building envelope. A thermal bridge is made of materials that will easily transfer heat, most commonly these are metal, concrete and glass. Our demonstration explores heat transfer through steel rebar which has a very high heat transfer coefficient. The demonstration consists of one wall section which is compromised thermally by rebar and a second which is properly insulated. The two wall sections have on one side an aluminum container of boiling water(100 C) and on the other a container of water at room temperature (25 C). The rebar wall section will allow heat to transfer and its SATP water will remain at a higher temperature than that of the properly insulated wall section.
